Something in the late summer air…
…is fanning my need to get down and geeky.
1st, I’ve been listening to lots of chip tunes lately. Through some Chip Tune action (still the baddest web UI I’ve seen in a loooong time), I stumbled on to the 8 Bit Collective’s song sharing site. Which is pretty niche in itself, but then after a few-days-and-dozens-of-songs worth of exploring, I came across something that is possibly even better: instructions and resources for how to make 8 bit chip tunes yourself, using a Game Boy! CHECK IT! So now, I’m thinking “damn programming awesome chip tunes with a Gameboy sounds like the ultimate pastime for my 50-minute train ride to and from work each day… I wonder what happened to my old Game Boy?” (I owned the OG black-n-white brick Game Boy - won it in a raffle contest or something when i was around 6…. my life hasn’t been the same since discovering Tetris). Low and behold, last night I roll over to the ‘rents house, dig through my closet, and pull out ol’ Trusty: pic
So I’ve been digging through the blogs/tutorials/merchant pages, trying to figure out when to pull the trigger on my very own chip tune mix unit. If it ever comes to fruition, dear Internet, I promise you’ll be among the first to hear.
In other news, this got me even more exited: http://monkeyfarm.cocolog-nifty.com/. Long story short: Use your favorite web-page translation engine, and enjoy pics and random musing of a Japanese guy who builds full size working mecha. Straight up Ripley’s grappler suit in Aliens or some of that MechWarrior ish. The title of the blog is (not making this up): “I make anything.” Subtitle: “Really huge robot if it works”. Gosh, the things I would do with money and a working knowledge of welding….
