Albums ahoy

Shaping up to be a big year for some of long-running favorite bands and dropping albums. Got word today that Fuck Buttons are releasing “Slow Focus” on June 23rd, and then minutes later an email arrived from Franz Ferdinand saying “Right Thoughts Right Words Right Action” is due August 27th. And then of course, there’s this whole Daft Punk album coming out shortly… as if you hadn’t heard.

Astronaut Performs David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” While Floating in Space

Before he returns to Earth after five months aboard the International Space Station, Commander Chris Hadfield recorded this amazing cover of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity.”

This isn’t Hadfield’s first foray into the world of YouTube. During his time in space he picked up quite the following here on Earth with his videos explaining what it’s like living for an extended period in space.

Ed note: We think this video should play on a loop in the National Air and Space Museum. What do you think of Hadfield’s cover?

I’ve been digging this tune for a hot minute. An island-esque sunblasted space groove, sort of what I picture the local rocket mechanics on Mercury will listen to about 3 in the afternoon on the slow summer day about 200 years from now.

Prolific developer Jonatan Söderström and graphic artist Dennis Wedin have announced their newest game collaboration Hotline Miami will be released under their new joint label Dennaton Games and published by shady game cartel Devolver Digital.

Step into the neon-soaked underground of 1980s Miami as bizarre messages on your answering machine seem to be urging you to commit terrible acts of violence — but will you obey? Hotline Miami overflows with raw brutality and skull crushing close combat as you find yourself outgunned and using your wits to choreograph your way through impossible situations. An unmistakable visual style, a driving soundtrack, and a surreal plot that will have you question your own thirst for blood. Bash and blast through over 20 multiscreen levels with 35 unique weapons and collect 25 game-altering masks in one of the darkest and most unusual independent games on the scene.

The hotline itself can be reached at +1 786 519 3708 or @HotlineMiami. Leave a message.

Charles Bradley, soul man extrordinaire, is back with a new album and a new video for a song off said album. Love me some Charles Bradley… makes me all warm and lovey on the inside.

New album Victim of Love drops next week.

We need more singers who sound like they’re turning granite boulders into sand inside their lungs. And more cumbia. And more pizza. And more peace, love, and understanding. But for right now, more of the aforementioned singers.

Been watching this one more and more frequently over the last few months… gets better every time.
Based on this guy and the video for “Iron”, i feel like Woodkid is building up to release some sort of overarching video narrative to accompany the album (due in March, i believe). If the rest is anything like this, it’s gonna redefine EPIC

access to knowledge and access to justice have become all about access to money, and Aaron tried to change that. That should never have been considered a criminal activity.

Pick a number between 1 and 99, write it as a word, then count the letters to get a new number. Write the new number as a word, and count its letters- repeat.  This curiosity was tweeted by @IanMathmogician, and if you try it you’ll find you get stuck at the number 4- the only number equal to its letter-count.  This image shows the network of what  your possible routes to 4 could be. It shows you’ll always get there after 5 steps. [code] [French version] [full size image]

APPARATJIK PRESENTS: LOWELL
“SHAKE HIM OFF”

“I don’t wanna go out until the sun is out. I just want to be cold, on the horizon. Its just me and my pillow, although we’re dead sick of the cold. I don’t want to tell you my stories, I don’t want to talk about dreams, I just want to fold my eyes, into my sleepy seeds. You know, we’ll never be friends, but that’s the thing about us; we find love in chaos.” - Lowell.

The origin of the word Lowell in both English and French means Wolf Cub.

Lowell had been working in the studio with Martin Terefe, Grammy award winning producer and member of the Apparatjik collective (Magne F (Aha), Guy Berryman (Coldplay) and Jonas Bjerre (MEW)). Terefe and the young Canadian artist ended up duetting together for Apparatjik’s Everybody Is One Bar project, whereby fans and other artists were encouraged to re-work tracks that would later appear on the bands second album, “Square Peg In A Round Hole”. Apparatjik immediately realised they had found a close musical relative; Lowell came from the snow just like them you see…

Martin and Lowell were soon joined by the rest of Apparatjik and after a four day recording session her debut EP was finished. “Shake Him Off” is the first song from the forthcoming mini-album to see the light of day. The percussion was recorded in Lowell’s bedroom in Toronto using pots and pans before being worked on with Apparatjik.

View Lowell’s homemade video which accompanies the track here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eS0WpB-Mm0

The Apparatjik presents: Lowell - “If You Can, Solve This Jumble” EP is released 29th October 2012.
